10 signs I’m not in Alabama anymore

by CountryFriedMama on August 3, 2011

The girls and I are staying with my mom for a couple of weeks while we wait for Country-Fried Daddy to drive north and for our new home (an apartment on a  crowded city block) to be ready. In the few days we’ve been here, one thing has become extremely clear: this ain’t Alabama.

Here’s how I can tell:

1. I went to a children’s event with the girls. There were probably more than 50 kids there, but we didn’t see a single bow or smocked outfit.

2. On my morning drive into the city, I merged into traffic, then gave a thank-you wave to the driver who reluctantly let me in front of his car. He flipped me off.

3. At a lunch attended by a half dozen people, the only fried thing on the table was tofu.

4. A Target clerk helped us locate some plastic plates for the kids. He was exceedingly friendly, but he did not call me, “ma’am.” I was not pleased.

5. The local weather report yesterday included a prediction of “severe” weather that might even include (gasp!) hail.

6. I have not seen a GMC Yukon for five days.

7. When I attempt to rely on the GPS to get me through city traffic, it sounds like this: Turn right then left then right. No, right! Right! Turn right now, lady! Damn it. You missed the turn. You’re gonna have to pull a U-ey.”

8. When we want to cool off the house, we open the windows.

9. When Miss D. requests okra for dinner, we tell her she can certainly have some — next July, when we go back to ‘bama.

10. After years of careful diction, I can feel my Rs rapidly slipping away from me.

Have you seen the Fighter? The depiction of his sisters made me bust a gut. Dead on.

I would love that! Are there Tweet Ups in these parts? Perhaps I might venture out…

There most certainly are Tweet Ups in these parts. Boston is bursting with Tweet Ups. Follow @BostonTweetUp . We even have a MegaTweetUp in December. It’s ultra cool.

This list just reminded of everything I love and miss about the city… and explains why I’m moving back to Boston tomorrow. So long Salisbury.
