Traditional anniversary gifts

Our house is overflowing with dress-up clothes and accessories.  My old purses spill out of a basket in the playroom.  Gowns with hoopskirts hang in Miss D.’s closet next to her school outfits, and The Belle has a stash of plastic sunglasses tucked away in a bin on her bookcase.

Despite this bounty, there’s a particular, out-of-sight accessory Miss D. covets.  It’s wrapped in tissue paper and nestled in a storage box on a high shelf in the hall closet.  I’ve told her she can have it one day, after she finishes college and maybe grad school and has completed many adventures and met someone who makes her laugh and think, someone who inspires her to take a great risk on a social institution that fails as much it succeeds.  It’s the hairpiece that held my veil on the day I married her daddy, and she thinks I’m pretty mean not to share it with her.

Maybe I will today.

The Internet tells me that, by rights, Country-Fried Daddy and I should be exchanging gifts made of tin or aluminum on this day.  It’s our 10th anniversary, which I’m sure we once imagined would be a grand affair.  TEN YEARS.  That’s the big time.  Surely, a decade of marriage warrants a significant observation.  Tin?  Aluminum?  On the day we married, we would more likely have guessed instead: Paris!  Diamonds!

I think I understand the tin/aluminum gift prescription better today than I might have back then.  These everyday materials reflect what our life together is about, 10 years into our marriage.

Our days are not particularly flashy.

We break up fights over crayons and baby dolls.  We cajole our reluctant pre-schooler into attending weekly soccer practice and try to heed our toddler’s demands to do everything herself.  We watch “Word Girl” on PBS and  listen to the “Annie” soundtrack in the car.  We wipe faces after dinner and tushies after naptime.

It’s a wonderful life.  Just not a let’s-go-to-Europe-while-wearing-precious-gems  kind of life.

On this day 10 years ago, I wore a tiara in my hair, and it was a beautiful accessory.  I’ll take it out and look at it today, and maybe let Miss D. wear it for a bit around the house to compliment her knee socks and plastic jewelry.

And for CFD’s gift, perhaps I will sculpt a shiny replica of the Eiffel Tower out of aluminum foil, my personal twist on the traditional recognition for 10 happy years.

I took these photos in response to this week’s You Capture assignment at I Should Be Folding Laundry.  You might be shocked to know that the prompt was “orange,” not “rambling stories about accessories and anniversaries.”

Happy Anniversary! We celebrated 10 years this past June and laughed over our BLT sandwiches about what we thought we would be doing to celebrate the big 1-0. :-) And those socks – I would wear them. :-)

Happy anniversary!!!

Our ten year is coming up in March, when I will be three months post-partum, still nursing, and please-oh-please-oh-please (maybe just barely) sleeping through the night. We’ve already been trying to come to terms with the fact that 10 years will NOT, in fact, hold a magical trip of glory and wonder. Thanks for the reminder that it doesn’t have to!!

Happy (belated) 10th anniversary! I agree — 10 is the big time. And on a side note, I need to get ahold of an “Annie” soundtrack. Memories!

I love the tights. Reminds me of when my Jazzy was smaller. LOL and wore what I wanted. :)
